Used Oil Recovery Project
According to the Department of Environment and Water Resources approximately 500 million litres of lubricating oil is sold in Australia each year. The inappropriate disposal of used oil has the potential to pollute land, water and infrastructure, so it is important to recover and recycle as much as possible.
The NetWaste Used Oil Recovery Project was funded through a Transitional Assistance Grant by the Product Stewardship for Oil Programme of the Department of the Environment and Water Resources. The aims of the project were to:
- Conduct a Regional Audit of Facilities for Collecting Used Oil
- Develop a Regional Waste Oil Management Plan
- Develop the Well Oil-Ed Learning Strategy
- The installation of 30 permanent used oil collection facilities at specified landfills and waste transfer stations throughout the NetWaste region
- Develop and implement a regional education plan to assist Councils to ensure maximum usage and benefit from the installations
- Investigate the development of a regional waste oil collection contract
A total of 30 used oil collection stations have now been installed across the NetWaste region.
