Environmental Learning Facility

The Environmental Learning Facility (ELF) is an innovative project built at the Orange Showground. A multi-functional centre for learning which is designed to provide a working demonstration of the technologies available for developing more ecologically sustainable lifestyles.

Work commenced on the construction of the facility in April 2003 and the support from the community, business and TAFE has been astounding. Support in the form of materials, labour and other in-kind assistance has clearly demonstrated the community's commitment to this project.

NetWaste is a major partner and sponsor in the development of the ELF and instrumental in providing cost effective resource sharing opportunities for the operation of the ELF. Construction of the ELF was completed in April 2005 and is now the office base for NetWaste staff. The development of the permaculture gardens on the site continue to be enhanced by the invaluable support of volunteers from the Orange community.

Orange Community Garden

Many people don't have enough space or knowledge to garden food plants for themselves or their families. Collectively, however, a community does have the skills, ability, time, knowledge and creativity to make a garden grow.

Gardens are a wonderful place to revitalise. They are a place to be active or quiet, watch things grow, learn from others, teach each other, actually have a softer footprint on this earth, talk about your week, meet new people and harvest foods for everyone to share. There are always things to do - from transplanting fragile seedlings to forking over the compost.

The Orange Community Garden has been established around the ELF with members coming from all walks of life. The group has regular working bees on the second Saturday of every month.

Anyone and everyone can be involved. There are tasks to suit all age groups and all strengths and abilities. People who like to be creative are encouraged to beautify the recycled materials used throughout the garden.
