2016/17 Waste to Art Overall Winner

Congratulations to our 2016/17 Waste to Art Overall Winner, Allan Stanger from  Dubbo NSW.

Edge of Extinction

Allan’s amazing work is titled “EDGE OF EXTINCTION”.

Created from old telephone books. What do telephone books and amphibians have in common?  They are both are on the Edge of an Extinction caused by change to their environment. Research has discovered 200 frog species are now extinct and hundreds more will be lost over the next century due to habitat destruction caused by deforestation.  As frogs are the first species to suffer population decline if their environment changes in any way, researchers often refer to them as the as canaries in the coal mines. Phone book production significantly contributes to deforestation as about 5 million trees are cut down each year to make phones books.  In our digital age, why are phone books not extinct?  I created a frog out of phone books to raise awareness about endangered amphibians in the hope that people will opt-out of phone book delivery.
